Study Abroad Programs

Types of Study Abroad Programs

Faculty-Led Programs

What they are: TSU faculty member(s) teach TSU courses specifically designed for an overseas location. Each program offers students an academically enriching experience in the host country, complemented by culturally relevant excursions that enhance their academic experience. Programs are taught in English (with the exception of language credit programs).

Duration & Credit: Typically lasting 2-4 weeks, this program offers 3-6 credit hours. It is offered during the summer, although a few options are also available during spring and fall breaks.

Ideal for: While any student can participate, they work especially well for those who have not traveled abroad previously, are seeking more guidance and structure, and prefer to travel with a group.

Key Advantage: Seamless credit transfer and direct support from TSU faculty.
Consortium Programs

What they are: TSU is affiliated with three Consortia program options. The Tennessee Board of Regents Global Studies (TBR Global Studies) is the most popular program with our students. These programs are very similar to Faculty-Led programs in that the courses are taught by U.S. Consortia member faculty (which sometimes means a TSU professor).

Duration & Credit: Typically 2-4 weeks in duration throughout the summer, providing three (3) credit hours.

Ideal for: Students who want to explore a wider variety of locations and academic focuses than might be available through TSU-specific programs, while still benefiting from a structured, group option.

Key Advantage: Broader program selection and opportunities to connect with students from other U.S. universities with a good deal of structure and support.
Third-Party Providers

What they are: TSU is affiliated with particular third-party provider organizations to supplement the overall portfolio of education abroad options. There are hundreds of third-party provider programs in existence. These programs are well-suited for students who want the immersive experience of attending a foreign university.

Duration & Support: Programs range in length from a few weeks during the summer or winter to a full academic semester or year. They are seeking a high level of support both here in the U.S., before departure, and while abroad.

Ideal for: Students looking for flexibility, diverse academic offerings not available through TSU exchanges, and comprehensive on-site support services provided by the organization.

Key Advantage: Tremendous variety, professional support services (housing, excursions, cultural activities), and a structured experience often with a cohort of other U.S. students.
