Taking Prerequisites for TSU's SLP program
Do I need a bachelor’s degree in the area of speech-language pathology to apply to the Master of Science Program in Speech and Hearing Science?
It is not necessary to have a bachelor’s degree in the area of speech-language pathology to apply to the Master of Science Program in Speech and Hearing Science in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology. Applicants who do not have a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Pathology or Communication Disorders are required to complete 15 hours of prerequisite courses. The courses are listed below. To enroll in prerequisite courses, students must apply to the Graduate School (http://www.tnstate.edu/graduate/) as a NON-DEGREE SEEKING student. Select “College of Health Sciences-non degree” as your program. Non-degree-seeking applicants for speech pathology and audiology should apply to TSU via GRADCAS. Contact the graduate school for additional directions. Telephone inquiries may be made at 615-963-7371 or email inquiries at gradschool@tnstate.edu.
What prerequisite courses are required for the MS degree in Speech and Hearing Science?
Fifteen (15) hours of prerequisite courses in speech-language pathology:
- SPTH 2500: Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech and Hearing Mechanism
- SPTH 2600: Phonetics
- SPTH 2800: Introduction to Speech, Hearing and Language Disorders
- SPTH 3300: Clinical Methods in Articulation Disorders
- SPTH 3500: Language and Speech Development in Children
*SPTH2600 is a prerequisite course for SPTH 3300
ASHA requirements:
Although the four courses mentioned below are not required for admission into Tennessee State University, it is required that applicants complete these courses prior to beginning their clinical fellowship year:
- Acceptable courses in biological sciences should emphasize a content area related to human or animal sciences (e.g., biology, human anatomy and physiology, neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, human genetics, veterinary science).
- Courses that meet the physical science requirement must be in physics or chemistry.
- Acceptable courses in social/behavioral sciences should include psychology, sociology, anthropology, or public health.
- A stand-alone course in statistics is required. Coursework in research methodology in the absence of basic statistics cannot be used to fulfill this requirement.
It is strongly encouraged to complete the ASHA-required basic science courses prior to completion of the graduate degree.
Note: Admission to the Graduate School as a “non-degree seeking” student does not indicate or guarantee admission to the Speech Pathology and Audiology graduate program.
How long does it take to complete the prerequisite courses at TSU?
The length of time that it takes to complete our five prerequisite courses depends on when you begin. Each class is a three-hour class. There is a chart below that shows when each class is offered. Our prerequisite classes are offered every semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer) and are offered online and in person. SPTH 2600 must be taken before SPTH 3300. All other courses can be taken in any order.
