BSSW Program Scholarships
There are two program scholarships administered by the program, the Dr. Hollace Brooks and Dr. Roderic Burton Scholarships. The Hollace Brooks Scholarship was established to award tuition scholarships to two students who meet certain eligibility criteria, and is awarded during the Dr. Hollace Brooks Symposium that is held annually during Social Work Month in February. The Roderic Burton Textbook Scholarship is awarded during the fall and spring semesters to two students who meet the eligibility criteria. Both of these scholarships are representative of the mission and goals of the program and recognize the contributions of these two educators and scholars to the Tennessee State University Social Work Program.
Dr. Hollace L. Brooks Scholarship 1948- 1991
Each year to commemorate Dr. Hollace Brooks, The Hollace Brooks Symposium is held in the month of February. The program is one of the vehicles that helps the Social Work program meet its mission.
Dr. Hollace L. Brooks was an extraordinary teacher and scholar, and he served Tennessee State University in countless ways. Professor Brooks was a member of the Department of Social Work and Sociology for fourteen (14) years. He served as Field Instruction Coordinator and In-Service Training Director. He also served as president of the University's Faculty Senate and in numerous other positions and duties.
Dr. Brooks was interested in research and received funds for grants, which dealt with mainstreaming mentally retarded youths in a summer sports program in 1978, 1979 and 1980. He was funded training grants under Title XX and Title IV-A. Dr. Brooks also developed the following manuals: "Basic Interviewing for Family Assistance Workers," for the Tennessee Department of Human Services Eligibility Counselors, May 1981; "A Multidisciplinary Training Manual in Child Abuse and Neglect" under a grant from the National Center for Child Abuse and Neglect. He co-authored a grant, "Afrocentric Alcohol and Drug In-Service Training Program for Child Welfare Workers. He was nationally, regionally and locally known for his expertise in training programs for serving children and families.
Known for his public service, Dr. Brooks was on the Advisory Board for the Nashville Child Care Center, and Metro Social Service Child Care Center. He also served as past president for Nashville Chapter of Black Social Workers and as board member of the Nashville Urban League.
Each year two students can become eligible to receive the Hollace Brooks scholarship. To receive any funds from the Hollace Brook Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: Complete an application.

Be majoring in Social Work.

Be a Junior or Senior.

Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Submit a 200-word essay based on Hollace Brooks life and ethics and commitment to the Profession of Social Work Education.

Be evaluated each school term to see if he/she still meets the requirements to receive the scholarship.

Have a letter of recommendation from his/her academic advisor.
**Students may receive the scholarship one time only. A maximum of (4) scholarships will be issued per year.
The awardee will read their essay at the Hollace Brooks Symposium. The scholarship money of $500.00 will be available in the recipients account for fall registration. Recipients will be assessed to determine if eligibility has been maintained for the fall. The deadline to submit applications is the first day in November.
Please submit application, resume, essay and a letter of recommendation to scholarship chairperson. All materials must be typed.
Dr. Roderic Burton Scholarship
The Burton Scholarship promotes the mission and goals of the program by providing students with supplemental financial assistance as they pursue a Social Work degree.
Dr. Roderic Burton was an extraordinary teacher and scholar and he served Tennessee State University in countless ways. Dr. Burton became a faculty member of Tennessee State University Department of Social Work in 1973. In 1982, he served as Acting Head of the Social Work & Sociology Department where he subsequently became Director of the Social Work Program in 1987. A native of Lebanon Tennessee, he also served a Co-director of the Center on Aging.
Known for his gerontological public service, Dr. Burton was on the Board of Directors for the Association for Gerontology and Human Development in Historically Black Colleges and Universities, National Caucus and Center on Black Aged. He is also on the Advisory Board of the Joseph Knowles Home for the Aged.
Dr. Burton is a member of the Southern Gerontological Society; Council on Social Work Education; National Association of Social Workers and Minority Representative for the Aging Council on Social Work Education.
Dr. Burton is the Director of Burton’s Consultant and Management Services and is the Chair of the Board of Directors for the United Way of Nashville.
Each year two students can receive financial assistance from the Burton Scholarship fund for textbooks. In order for s student to receive any funds for the Burton Scholarship they must meet the following criteria:

Complete an application.

Student must be majoring in Social Work.

Student must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Student must present verification of need for assistance.

Student must submit a two-page typed essay of why they should receive this scholarship fund.
**Students may receive the scholarship one time only. A maximum of (2) scholarships will be issued per semester. The scholarship money of $250.00 will be available in the recipients account.
Please submit your application to the Social Work Program office. All essays must be typed.
