classroomThe Department of Business Information Systems (BIS), in support of the mission of the University and the College, prepares students to have the skills, the competencies and the knowledge to manage the integration of technology with business processes, and provides a range of career opportunities in information technology and business management roles in today’s modern business world.The BIS program prepares students to be effective:

  • users,
  • developers,
  • and managers

of information technologies/systems in organizations.  The program provides students with practical knowledge in the determination of the capabilities of information technologies in providing business solutions. The strength of BIS major lies in the ability to combine an understanding of business with the knowledge of information systems and technology to help organizations compete more efficiently and successfully.  The department offers three concentration areas, including: Business Data Analytics, Information Systems (Formerly known as BIS-Industry), and e-Business Technology.

Business Data Analytics (BDA) Concentration

BDAThe Business Information Systems in Business Data Analytics (BDA) concentration exposes students to analytics practices associated with Big Data in the business world. The program explores such key areas as the data extraction and preparation, data creation and storage, merging and grouping data, modeling and model evaluations. Both supervised and unsupervised techniques will be addressed.

E-Business Technology (EBT) Concentration 

The Business Information Systems in e-Business Technology (EBT) concentration prepares students for a career in the rapidly growing field of e-Commerce and e-Business. The degree program provides a solid business foundation upon which rigorous information technology competencies are built. The graduates of the program will possess the requisite management and technology skills required for positions in the e-Business and e-Commerce arena. The main objective of the Program is to develop students who understand the strategic and operational nature of e-Business, and are capable of developing dynamic, Web-based systems that provide a strategic and competitive advantage.

Information Systems (IS) Concentration - Formerly known as "BIS-Industry" 

The Business Information Systems in Information Systems (IS) concentration prepares the students for exciting career in the different areas of general information systems (IS) / information technology (IT) industry. Information Systems concentration prepares students to help organizations design and use systems for conducting transactions, managing information about customers, employees and suppliers, and ensuring the security of communications. They study how people adapt to new information technologies and advise organizations how to make the most of the information available to them.

 

Where could a degree in Business Information Systems take me?

Every company uses business information systems in all areas of their business. The training you receive in our business information systems program will prepare you to handle situations these companies face every day.

The IS professional is a “people-person,” and a “business-person,” but who can also “talk technology,” solving meaningful organizational problems. IS professionals translate information needs into technology needs and translate technological capabilities into new business capabilities. At graduation, students pursue diverse management and IS opportunities within corporations and consulting firms. Our recent graduates have accepted full-time positions at companies from a variety of business segments, with a median starting salary of about $60,000 a year.

What courses are involved?

BIS students take the same basic business courses (Accounting, Economics, Finance, Management, Marketing, etc.) as other business students and earn the same business degree (BBA). But BIS students also learn database, data anayltics, computer/cyber security, networking, web applications, etc., so they know how to help businesses leverage technology for competitive advantage.
