Dr. Deo Chimba, students and other faculty Spearheads a Remarkable Attendance at the 2024 TRB Annual Meeting in Washington DC

In a significant showcase of academic excellence and research prowess, Dr. Deo Chimba, accompanied by an impressive 14 students and faculty members, attended the prestigious 2024 Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting in Washington DC. This event, renowned for its impact on transportation research and policy, was a platform where our esteemed faculty and students presented their groundbreaking research papers. Dr. Chimba and several students presented their research papers. Undergraduate student, Zaria Bullard was awarded the best Minority Student Fellows Outstanding Poster.

Joining Dr. Chimba were Dr. Kamrul Hasan from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Dr. Kimberly Triplett from the Urban Studies. The high number of students from different disciplines was a testament to how Transportation system is diverse and attracts interdisciplinary nature of research at our College of Engineering. The group of students included Aaron Lamson, Jose Portillo, Bryson Mgani, Bahati Chimba, Innocent Macha, Irene Akyoo, Elise Russ, Zaria Bullard, Subash Gupta, Dorcas Machimu, and Beatrice Magombana, all from the Civil Engineering department. They were joined by Emmanuel Samson and Al Amin from Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Jeremy Humphrey from Urban Studies.

The participation of such a large and diverse group from our college at the TRB Annual Meeting is not only a matter of pride but also an indicator of the cutting-edge research and collaborative spirit fostered at our institution in the area of transportation engineering and planning. Dr. Chimba's leadership and the students' contributions to this high-profile conference are commendable and highlight the college's commitment to advancing transportation research and education.

Furthermore, Dr. Chimba had the opportunity to engage with several of our key research sponsors, including his research Project managers and key staff from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), FTA, TDOT, DHS, and others. These interactions are crucial for fostering ongoing collaborations and securing future research opportunities. Dr. Chimba has been taking students to TRB meeting every year since 2011, the effort which has produced dozens of transportation engineers that graduated from TSU. This has also led to interaction, collaboration and securing research grants with transportation agencies such as TDOT, USDOT, FRA and others.

The College of Engineering celebrates this remarkable achievement and extends its congratulations to Dr. Chimba, his colleagues, and the students for their outstanding representation at the 2024 TRB Annual Meeting. Their efforts and accomplishments reflect the college's dedication to excellence in engineering education and research.
