Nanoscience and Biotechnology
Promoting Science Literacy
The Center for Micro-, Nano-, and Bio-Technology (CMNBTR) consists of 5 laboratories (environmental, biochemical, cell culture, and 2 nano-bio laboratories) located on the first and second floor of the Research and Sponsored Programs building on Tennessee State University’s main campus.
The NBCF is able to support a variety of research areas. These research areas include:
- Bio-engineering
- Nanotechnology
- MEMS & NEMS devices
- MEMS & NEMS materials and process technology
- Energy and power technology
- Materials
Mission
The mission of CMNBTR is to promote and facilitate a multidisciplinary approach in order to produce a diverse and talented cadre of scientists and researchers by:
- Providing faculty and students with state-of-the-art nanoscience and biotechnology equipment and proficiency
- Providing greater understanding of the nanoscience and biotechnology fields
- Providing collaboration opportunities with peer universities, industry, and government professionals
- Developing and applying solutions to address society’s global issues
Funding
Funding for research has come from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), The State of Tennessee, Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Funding has also been received from other public and private companies.
Training
Training for each instrument is led by a faculty researcher with expertise in one of the science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) disciplines. In addition, the use of each instrument has been mastered by at least one graduate student who serves as the Super-user or student expert and trains incoming students. The laboratory is also supported by a research specialist.
