Animal Use and Care Training

** MANDATORY TRAINING for Researchers/Faculty using Animals

Federal regulations of the Animal Welfare Act (USDA) and regulations of the Department of Health and Human Services require training and continuing education of all scientists, research technicians, animal care technicians and others involved with animal care and use. These laws and regulations require the IACUC to act as an agent of the University to determine that personnel are trained and qualified to conduct procedures on a given animal species and maintain documentation of such training. To fulfill this responsibility, the TSU IACUC requires personnel involved with animal care and use to complete training programs as provided.

All TSU investigators, research support staff, and educators using animals for research and teaching are required to complete training courses in animal care and use. The training modules are located on the Training Site described below. Individuals must achieve specified certification by the TSU IACUC before being allowed to work with animals associated with University activities. New employees should become certified within six (6) months of employment.

In individual circumstances, the IACUC may mandate viewing of applicable species-specific training modules.

The purposeful subversion of the intent of the modules, providing exam answers to colleagues and(or) "gaming" the software is unethical and qualifies as research/academic misconduct. Re-certification is required every three years.
