At Tennessee State University, we define an entering freshman as one of the following:

  • High School Senior: You're applying during your senior year.
  • Dual Enrollment Student: You're a high school student who has completed dual-enrollment courses.
  • High School Graduate: You're a graduate who has never attended college.
  • Early Admission Student: You've completed or are graduating in your junior year and wish to enroll full-time during your senior year.

No matter which path you choose, TSU is here to support you every step of the way as you embark on your academic journey!

Freshman Admission Criteria:

We’re excited to welcome new students to our community! To be considered for admission, applicants must have a minimum weighted GPA of 2.5 and an ACT score of at least 19 or an SAT score of 900. TSU is not test-optional.

  • ACT SCHOOL CODE: 4010
  • SAT SCHOOL CODE: 1803

We understand that standardized tests and GPAs don’t tell the whole story. If you don’t meet these criteria but believe you have other strengths or experiences that should be considered, you’re encouraged to apply for a freshman appeal following a denial decision. We’re committed to evaluating each student’s potential and unique contributions to our campus.

Students over the age of 21 do not have to send test scores but may need to contact admissions@tnstate.edu to have application completion items updated.

Please note : If you participated in dual enrollment coursework while in high school, you must submit your college transcript as part of your application. Contact the college where you took the courses to request an official transcript, which may involve filling out a form and paying a fee. Be mindful of submission deadlines and request your transcript well in advance. For assistance, contact admissions @tnstate .edu !
