Core Facility
The Nanoscience and Biotechnology Core Facility (NBCF) is located on the first and second floors of the Research and Sponsored Programs building on Tennessee State University's main campus. INITIAL FUNDING Initial funding from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Department of Defense Research and Engineering Office, and subsequent institutional support gave the Division of Research and Sponsored Programs the platform to build the 7,000 square feet of dedicated laboratory and office space as well as purchase an extensive list of multi-user equipment. INSTRUMENTS Each instrument is lead by a faculty researcher in one of the science, technology, engineering, or mathematics disciplines. In addition, each instrument has been mastered by at least one graduate student who serves as the student expert and trains incoming students. MONTHLY SEMINARS Monthly cross-discipline seminars are held to inform faculty, students, and the community of the capabilities available in the Nano-Bio Core that might enhance or broaden the scope of their research. Each seminar is focused on an instrument and supplemented with faculty presentations that demonstrate how the equipment has enhanced their research. DESIRE MORE INFORMATION? To learn more about the state-of-the-art research facility or the monthly seminars, please contact us.
Each incoming project receives an hour consultation at no charge; afterwards there is an $85.00 per hour charge for time spent researching techniques, evaluating data (quantitative and/or qualitative) or for anything extra beyond routine. The Core will provide 4 hours of training in electron microscopy techniques or use of either the TEM or SEM. The cost for this training is charged to the investigator at the independent rate of $85.00/ hour. *A modified Karnoysky's fixative can be provided for up to 10 specimen, additional fixatives or special types will be at an extra cost. Tissue specimens for TEM should be about 2x2x2 mm or smaller. For special types of specimen (cultured cells, thin layers of tissue, tissue that require special orientation) contact lab personnel for instructions. **This represents direct digital images. ***Results cannot be guaranteed since antibody specific/titer, quality/fixation of tissue and amount of target protein can limit success. Investigator provides primary antibody and necessary background literature.
