Research Interests Dr. Heaston is a new faculty member in public health, focusing on health disparities, obesity, and community-based research. Her most recent publications and dissertation research addressed peer-based education in college communities, with particular attention to education on the health risks of certain sexual behaviors and prevention of poor health outcomes. It detailed the high incidence of depression, anxiety, and substance abuse among undergraduate college students in Tennessee and proposed educational interventions to reduce these rates. . Dr. Heaston is interested in young adults’ health practices and decision making related to obesity, mental health, and sexual and reproductive health. As an NHLBI Obesity Health Disparities PRIDE Fellow, she is building on the knowledge of students’ health and health-related challenges to understand how sexual practices among overweight and obese young people may be influenced by depression. She is currently working in secondary datasets such as NHANES to identify patterns and gaps in our current knowledge about sexual health practices in the adolescent and young adult population.
