Tennessee State University Commencement Ceremony
How long does the ceremony last?
Each ceremony generally lasts 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the number of graduates.
Do I need a ticket to attend?
Tickets are not required at this time.
Am I required to attend Commencement?
No, participation is optional; however, all degree requirements must be completed to officially graduate.
What time should graduates arrive?
Graduates should arrive at least 60–90 minutes before their scheduled ceremony time for check-in and lineup.
What if I cannot attend?
Your degree will still be awarded once all requirements are met. Your diploma will be mailed.
Is seating reserved?
Seating is generally first-come, first-served unless otherwise specified.
Are children allowed?
Yes, children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Will the ceremony be livestreamed?
Yes, ceremonies are typically livestreamed for family and friends who cannot attend in person.
Will professional photos be taken?
Yes, a professional photographer will capture images of graduates as they cross the stage.
Will I receive my diploma at the ceremony?
No, diplomas are mailed after final grades are posted and degrees are officially conferred.
How are Latin honors determined?
Honors (cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude) are based on cumulative GPA. Final honors are confirmed after the semester ends.
What if my honors status changes after the ceremony?
The official designation on your transcript and diploma will reflect final grades, even if it differs from the ceremony recognition.
Are accommodations available for guests with disabilities?
Yes, accessible seating and services are available. Guests should contact the university in advance for assistance. More information regarding ADA services can be found here.
Where should guests park?
Parking will be available in designated campus lots near the Gentry Center. Directional signage and staff will assist. More information regarding parking can be found in the Commencement Guide.
