Math Challenges
Age & Grade-Appropriate for the Classroom
The Math Challenges are age and grade-appropriate questions which involve multiple steps that cover key mathematical skills or concepts taken from the Tennessee State Curriculum Standards. The challenges are developed by a team of assessment specialists at ETS who are former elementary school teachers and have experience using a variety of teaching and assessment methods. The goal of each challenge is to provide the teacher evidence of the level of student understanding of specific learning targets.
Below are examples of the Math Challenges which the SITES-M project teachers are using in their classrooms. Each Math Challenge packet includes a cover page with instructions, the Math Challenge Meeting Protocol for use within teacher professional learning communities, the Math Challenge, and the Analyzing Student Responses Protocol in order for teachers to think about and analyze student responses.
