Every Gift Makes A Huge Impact Upon Lives
Cynthia Synder | Class of 1979
“I, like many minorities in my generation, did not have the financial means to pay for college, so I had to rely on grants and working a part-time job to pay for my education. This inspired my siblings and me to establish a STEM scholarship to honor our mother, Mary Catherine Gardner, for her inspiration and commitment to education. It is our way of paying forward, providing financial assistance to TSU students who have the desire and dream to further their education, but do not have the financial means to make that dream a reality, especially in STEM programs.
Four female members of my family, to include myself, earned degrees from TSU in electrical, civil, architectural and aeronautical engineering, which is why increasing minority representation in STEM programs is very important to my family and me. These programs opened doors previously shut and provided unlimited professional opportunities that we and other African Americans would not otherwise have had available to us. Education unlocks doors, and we want to help unlock doors for future generations and pray they will be inspired to do the same for others coming behind them.”
Valerie Murray | Class of 1996
“I am absolutely compelled, and it is a personal mandate over my life, to give back to my alma mater, Tennessee State University! I am, first, so blessed for the wisdom, knowledge and long-lasting memories that the Land of Golden Sunshine instilled in me. In order for TSU to continue to progress and to adequately prepare current students and future alumni, my (our) donations are absolutely critical! There are countless amazing students currently enrolled, and I want to be a part of helping ensure they have the opportunity to make a tremendous impact on the world!”
April Taylor | Class of 2002
“I donate to TSU because I believe in the power of opportunity. Lack of access can hinder opportunities. I’m fortunate to have received a full scholarship that, along with work in and out of the classroom, has afforded me many opportunities. I believe giving comes in many forms, not just money. I also mentor several students.”
Gena Townsend | Class of 1980
“Why do I give? Why do I believe in supporting my beloved university? I give because I care. I give because I want my university to survive and flourish for at least the next 200 years. I give because I want to say thank you. My time at TSU provided me with the education and taught me resilience to prosper in today’s society. Those traits should be available for the future generations. One way to maintain this is to give. That is why I give.”
