Network Card

Desktop Computers

  • Requires a 10/100 Ethernet Card with an RJ-45 jack. (Figure 1 above). The connection for the network cable is usually located in the rear of computer.
  • Don't confuse it with a modern jack. The Ethernet jack is wider than the modern jack.
  • Ethernet cards can be purchased at the University's bookstore, Walmart, or any other electronics store. They run between $15-$35.
  • You will need to follow factory directions for installing the card yourself or pay to have it installed for you,

University staff cannot install the network card for you.

For laptop computers without a built in or internal network card, a Ethernet card that slides into the PCMCIA slot will be necessary.

Ethernet card

  • The PCMCIA slot is usually located on the back or side of your laptop.
  • PCMCIA network cards can be purchased at stores that sell computers and electronic devices.
  • You will need to follow the factory directions for card installation and software configuration.

University staff cannot install the network card.

Wireless Network

TSU has wireless network connectivity on campus following 802.11g standard. The wireless network will require authentication in the future.

Ethernet Cable

Make sure that you have the appropriate cable (RJ-45 Ethernet cable/ CAT 5 or higher). Do not use a telephone cable, they look similar, but are not the same. Once you have both the network card in the computer and the Ethernet cable., simply plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the RJ-45 port on the back of the computer and the other end into the DATA jack located with the telephone jack.

The DATA jack is normally orange.

TSU is responsible for making sure that the network jack is functioning.

3. Select RUN and type "cmd" in the text line.

4. The screen will become a text screen with a black background.

6. If the data displayed next to "IP Address" is listed as something like this: 10.101.23.12 then you have Internet and network connection.

7. If it is blank or all zeros, then call the Help Desk at 615-963-7777 for further assistance.

8. Once you have a good connection, you will need to install Clean Access.
