Limited English Proficiency (LEP)
Limited English Proficiency (LEP) Compliance at Tennessee State University
Limited English Proficiency (LEP) is a key component of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, ensuring that individuals are not excluded from federally funded programs due to their English communication skills. Tennessee State University (TSU), as a recipient of federal funding, is committed to providing meaningful access to all programs and services for individuals with LEP. This commitment aligns with TSU's goals of promoting equal opportunities for all members of the university community, regardless of language proficiency.
What is LEP?
Limited English Proficiency (LEP) refers to individuals who do not speak English as their primary language and have limited ability to communicate in English. At TSU, we are committed to ensuring that LEP individuals can access all programs and services without facing barriers.
Why LEP Compliance Matters
Ensuring access for individuals with LEP is crucial not only for regulatory compliance but also for fostering an inclusive environment. Discrimination based on language ability violates Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and can hinder personal and academic growth. TSU actively works to eliminate language barriers, enabling full participation in university life.
Ensuring Meaningful Access
Meaningful access means that LEP individuals can effectively engage in university activities, including:
- Receiving Important Information: Ensuring critical communications are accessible.
- Understanding Course Content: Providing educational materials in a comprehensible format.
- Engaging with Staff and Peers: Facilitating communication to promote inclusivity.
TSU’s Commitment to LEP Compliance
TSU offers language assistance services at no cost, ensuring that all individuals with LEP can participate fully in university programs. This includes support for both written materials and spoken communications.
Available Language Services at TSU
TSU provides a variety of free language assistance services through Avaza Language Services Corporation, including:
