Welcome!
Define Yourself in Languages, Literature and Philosophy
Welcome to the Department of Languages, Literature and Philosophy!
The Department offers courses in English, Foreign Languages, Philosophy and Religious Studies. We offer a B.A. in English and minors in English, Writing, Foreign Languages and Philosophy.
The Department is the largest academic unit on campus with approximately fifty faculty members—including twenty-five tenured/tenure-track faculty members. Department members represent a variety of specializations such as Creative Writing, Rhetoric and Composition, Culture Studies, Ethics, Digital Media and Popular Culture. Most students at the University will take Freshman Composition I (ENGL 1010), Freshman Composition II (ENGL 1020) and Sophomore Literature as part of the General Education curriculum. The majority of faculty members staffing these courses are full-time faculty.
Students who major in English go on to study law, pursue graduate studies in a variety of disciplines or work in business or industry. The department also offers a B.A. in English with Teacher Certification in English Language Arts, Grades 7-12. The B.A. in English program—as well as the General Education courses—focuses on three skills necessary for any career or advanced degree: 1) reading; 2) writing; and, 3) research.
The B.A. also allows students to develop a fourth skill, perhaps as important as these three: creativity.
The B.A. in English program has developed the internship program which allows students to earn up to nine credit hours in a work-place setting. TSU English majors have interned with community partners such as the Tennessee Legislature, Guitar Player magazine, TEDxNashville, the Tennessee State Democratic Party and the Middle Tennessee YMCA.
